rabbits, mushrooms, and a new car

It has been a stressful few weeks, our car blew up and is still waiting at the bottom of our driveway to be towed to the house. We drove to West Virginia and bought my dream car, a 2004 Subaru Forester. It is already the perfect farm car, with so much storage space for markets. Unfortunately, because of the payments (added on top of our broken down car's payments) and higher insurance, Jonathan has to give up his extra day off from our day job, which means less time to do farm work. It could be worse though, hopefully we will find a way to sell the old car soon enough. We spent today working on more mushroom baskets and weeding the garden which was completely over run. I wrote about the mushrooms and shared more photos on the farm blog, here . The rabbits are growing fast and I love these spotty babies.  Well, it is late and my comfy bed is calling me. Goodnight. rabbit tractors Rose's spotty babies Amy's spotty babies Amy with her kits This

mushroom harvesting and more basket making

We harvested our first phoenix oyster mushrooms this week, and this weekend we inoculated five more straw baskets which will fruit in a few weeks. A big thanks to Chris and Eli from Fantastic Fungi for their great spawn! Now we just have to fight off the beetles that are attacking them! I have been researching and so far it seems the best options are bug juice (made from smooshed beetles and water) and Neem (a natural plant oil that deters and kills pests.) We worked super hard today, and tomorrow we will be taking a little time off to visit with both of our dad's for Father's Day.  We hope you have a great weekend, make time for your dad's too! fruiting baskets lighter shelf underside ^_^ new greenhouse setup the baskets are growing and growing Live simply, Angela and Jonathan

optimism and small changes

Things have been a little bit stressful on a personal note, inside my head, for the last few weeks.  Today after a busy morning outside, we re-arranged our bedroom during a thunderstorm and I already feel better. I don't write often about the tribulations of our blessings, it would be an outright lie to say that it is always easy to live with my parents. No matter what we do it never truly feels like ours. We got a new corner chair from Jonathan's mom and it fits perfectly under the tree mural I painted, and is so very comfortable. I think that this change to our room will help me feel more like I belong, or something.  The grass is always greener... outside things are looking good. Nearly everything in the garden is sprouting. We only have peppers and corn left to plant. The rabbits are growing. We fixed the rabbit tractor so it is completely escape proof. We also got another cage from Jonathan's cousin Pam (thanks again!) that we made into a tractor, which now

watching the fungus grow

We did our first round of full size straw baskets last weekend, and today we unwrapped them and the mycelium has taken off quite nicely. We are slowly but surely getting there! full size baskets close up of the fungus mini baskets are still a going Live simply, Angela and Jonathan
