happy birthday blog!

3 years 284 posts 9777 page views countless words My blog just celebrated its third birthday on new years, and I thought it was worth it to mention how much this space has helped me grow as a writer and as a person. My blogging career actually started much earlier, with a LiveJournal account through my middle and high school years; a pitiful collection of ramblings and nonsense, but everyone starts somewhere. Looking back now it's amazing to see how my writing skills have improved, my thought process and ideas, and how it has helped me sort through difficult times in my life. Above all else, I have enjoyed it, and don't plan to quit anytime soon. "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." re-creation and reaching out

my checklist for this weekend is almost done, and i still have tomorrow!  After a few days thinking it over, I'm currently working on setting up a new facebook page. I have one, which I enjoy, but have always been extremely picky about who I'm friends with. My rule of thumb (although there are a few exceptions) is that I have to really be friends with someone, hang out sometimes, actually like them. I use it to share my real life, my real feelings, and I need a space like that. I speak my mind, which is often uncensored. Want in on a little secret? I have a very filthy mouth. It's a problem. I know when to keep it clean, which I do with this space, anything farm related, at work, etc. But on my personal page, I say what I think and feel, in whatever spicy words come to mind. I like it that way. This new page will be for reaching out in the community, as lame as that sounds. Starting a farm in a rural area, wanting to write more often, gain more readers, have a fol...

missing in action. inspiration.

I haven't written in over a week, but every single day I have at least three or four posts of ideas, thoughts, information, passing through my brain. Writing a book is a desire I have pushed away for years, but keep finding myself coming back to. From my childhood, a mother struggling with depression and bipolar disorder, a dad doing his best to hold them all together, to early adulthood where my own battles with depression and anxiety took me to places out of my worst nightmares. And now, living with my soulmate, starting a farm, planning a wedding, making our dreams come true, and happier than ever.  There are so many stories inside me. "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." - Maya Angelou Two fellow farmers and bloggers have especially inspired me recently, who also make their living writing books, Jon Katz and Ben Hewitt. I hope you will check them out. I have been reading a few of Jon's new books that I received for Chr...

happy new year!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! I enjoyed every moment of it. Christmas was great to spend with family and friends. New years eve weekend was fun, Jonathan and I spent a ton of time just being together to celebrate our anniversary. In lieu of any extravagant and far fetched resolutions I only have one goal this year, to blog more. I keep thinking more and more about writing. Ideas constantly fill my head. In an attempt to aid this creativity I just installed the blogger app on my phone so I can share more often when I'm on the go. We will see where it leads... Who knows what the year has in store for us? I am very excited to find out. Until next time, Angela Kelly

something's different around here...

the first storm of the season  I made a list full of changes to the blogs today. After a lot of consideration, I have imported all of the farm blogs into this one, and changed the name, domain, look and feel of this site to incorporate them both. The truth of the matter is, I can't keep them separate. The farm is our life. They are too connected. I am more drawn to the animals lately than ever before. Inspired by the blog and books of Jon Katz, I have been noticing more about their personalities and habits on a daily basis. Watching them more, paying attention.  I'm excited about this space. Until next time, Angela Kelly

a confession of laziness...

The past few weeks I have been awful about posting blogs. A combination of other things on my mind, weather frustrations, farm projects and planning; but I stopped today to think and realized just how many times this week I have thought of the events unfolding as if I were dictating them to you. I feel like I have distanced myself from daily writing to the point that it feels an unfamiliar and daunting task to do so. This is supposed to be fun for me, a way to share and express my life and creativity, my journey- more than anything else. Wow- an epiphany. My journey - that's what this place is for. Whatever creativity, adventures, ups, downs, friends, family, daily commitment and spells of absence or uncertainty. It's all part of the journey. But with all that said- I hope this "distant and sporadic" spell is coming to an end. Maybe we will ease back into this with a few of the things you've been missing thanks to my laziness. 1. the seeds for the gar...

meet me on the equinox

The change is in the air. The mornings are cold, the afternoons warm but not hot. The first of the leaves are starting to change red and yellow. There's a breeze. Things don't feel so claustrophobic, somehow. It has been a long month, the end of summer commanding so much of our time. We went back to the mountains for a weekend to celebrate the abundance of birthdays in the two months until we will return. We were in desperate need of friends and quality family time. The weekend also lent us many conversations of future farm projects, and sparked a new excitement for returning home. I cannot wait to be on our farm. Oh, speaking of our farm-it has a name now. The Luna Acres Homestead. Until next time, Angela Kelly

an experiment in free writing

I am sitting at our dining table, sipping coffee and eating oatmeal, preparing for another day. I am trying to think of a topic to write about, but not having much success, so I decided to use an old high school english class tool- free writing. The idea is to put words to paper for a few minutes, even if you don't have an idea of what to write, just to get your brain going. I have tons of ideas for great blogs, the problem is I never get around to taking the right photos at the right time to make it all come together. Perhaps I will share some of my ideas? I've been thinking it would be fun to make some food posts, since I have been cooking much more here on the farm. It isn't anything fancy, but simple home made meals and treats, using what I have and can find. Another idea is art posts. Since stocking up on card stock a few weeks ago I have been a paper project machine. Since it is Mother's Day coming up this weekend, I am working on gifts for my dear mothers (mine...

bits and pieces

It's hard to believe how quickly time is passing since we arrived here. I looked at the calendar earlier and realized it's already the last day of March! Fortunately it is Saturday, a day for laziness and staying (mostly) indoors, catching up with my paint brushes and keyboard. I felt my blog layout and design was a bit overwhelming while also restricting. I have re-designed, simply but smoothly, most importantly with room for larger images, because I feel my photos have been less-than-impressive when sized down (not that they are too great anyways.) I also want to stop editing them quite as much, mainly because I don't have the time to adjust every single image, especially since my lack of photoshop (and related skills) limits what I can do to them. I do wish to have beautiful eye catching images like I see on many of the lovely blogs I read, but I don't know how to achieve that with the camera and programs I have access to. Any help or advice will gladly be heard :)...

what a weekend

Well, it was my birthday weekend, and I had so much fun relaxing and spending time with my favorites. The weekend began with a lazy night at home with Jonathan, playing games and snuggling. Saturday we enjoyed sleeping in. Then we headed to town to visit my sister, Amy. It was great to get to spend the whole day with her. It led to an unexpected night of cooking and hanging out with my sweetheart and our friend Ethan. We helped fix a delicious dinner of lemon-pepper tilapia, rice, stir-fry vegetables, and garlic bread. The weekend ended with a day spent at home, having an indoor picnic with my sweetheart for lunch, and a steak dinner around the table with my family. Throw in a little craft project (Valentine's Day themed, too!) and it was a great weekend. In addition to a beautiful new, more customized blog design, I have lots of blog ideas for this week. I wish I could figure out how to make pretty buttons for my page links, any help? Enjoy my photo weekend adventure. ...
