ducks in the woods

We moved the ducks yesterday. They always love getting fresh grass, leaves and dirt to peck through. Penny sent us a new kiddie pool.  We can't really level it up, but they still love it. I have been searching for some more duckies to add to the flock, but so far I haven't had any luck, except for ducklings. Maybe after the cob workshop. Until next time, Angela Kelly

spring: rabbits and ducks

Donna and one of her babies  It was so beautiful this afternoon, even though my shoulder hurts (I pulled a muscle somehow yesterday) I forced myself outside for a bit. I cleaned out a few rabbit cages, watched the ducks, enjoyed the sunshine. Everything is starting to turn so very green, soon the trees will be full and shady, the garden tilled and planted, the rabbits out on grass. I love this time of year. duckies one of the Pekins spotty bunny this guy got to have a girlfriend last weekend ;-) liking their fresh hay Rose and one of her little babes. So adorable. i can feel spring creeping in

baby bunnies more babies storm hangin out It was a beautiful early spring weekend!  We got the tiller up and running, pulled the wheels off which need to be replaced.  The front yard has been cleaned of the trash, sticks,  and graveyard of deer bones which always seem to accumulate over the winter.  Loaded the back porch with firewood.  Spent some time enjoying the animals.  The baby bunnies are getting their fur and opening their eyes.  We also made time this weekend to hang out with friends (Amy and Savannah, my favorites, always)  as well as family, Jonathan's mom Penny,  plus both of my grandmothers, which was a special treat for me.  The time always goes by too fast, back to work tomorrow,  but the days are growing longer and longer,  giving us time in the evening to enjoy our little paradise.  Spring is here, everyone! the pretty girls ducky duck ducks the b...

my slacking, and photos of ducks.

duckies swimming on a gross rainy day last week Man, what a week!  I have been so good about posting regularly,  and here we are, seven days since I wrote.  We have just been so busy! It might take us a bit to catch up: -we had lots of baby bunnies -a pretty bad wind storm nearly took out all the bunnies -my grandmother was sick and in the hospital :( -I painted and redecorated the den, my new studio space -all that painting had to flow into the kitchen and hallway, a lot of painting... -we had to take a break to support local music on Saturday night Well, I think that's it, but it's probably not! Look for more details about some of these things this week. ducky duck ducks :) Until next time, Angela Kelly

duck day

the boys always hide the girls when I come around with the camera my pretty girls Our little flock of ducks are funny to watch. The boys always guard the girls from people, dogs, whatever else might come near them. We need to move their coop and run soon, they have more than sufficiently beaten down this section of garden weeds. I'm excited for spring, probably mid-May, when we can get them some new friends to add to the flock. Until next time, Angela Kelly

snow days in march

Dakota is watching us from the hill. Zae is being a big baby. pretty snow snow snow snow snow ducks :) They are going to love their new pool, as soon as it warms up!  I am very much ready for winter to be over, but I have to admit it's a beautiful snow day.  It's still coming down pretty hard here, who knows how much we will end up with.  I'm glad it came on a Monday, when we were already off work and home for the day.  I have lots of lists and projects inside that need to be worked on, now to decide where to start... Until next time, Angela Kelly

baby blue duck eggs make me smile

Since the day before the storm last week we have been getting nearly a duck egg a day.  Beautiful baby blue duck eggs. It makes me very happy. The little wicker duckie makes me smile too. I have a red one two, they were goodwill gifts from my sister. I adore them. Until next time, Angela Kelly

real snow - the morning chores

When I woke up at 7 this morning it was still dark outside, but I could see that it was only a dusting on the driveway. Sigh. I fixed a cup of coffee, turned on the little heater in the bathroom, and got ready for work. Twenty minutes later when I came back into the bedroom it was a bit brighter outside, with a lot more snow. It was coming down hard too. We went outside and took care of the animals. The rabbits seem just fine in their new fixed up cages. The ducks, always impervious, swam and splashed about in their water bowl for a solid thirty minutes before retreating to the fresh hay in their crate to warm their feet. Not for long though, I can see them back out there now. Since I moved the fence yesterday I can see them perfectly from my bedroom window. It makes me smile. I'm glad that it snowed enough, early enough, that we could call into work. Snow day! The dogs are a trip to watch in the snow. Playful as ever, they run around kicking it up, eating it o...

moving the ducks

On Sunday morning while the men were cutting firewood I moved the ducks fence from the back of the coop to the front, to give them a new patch of grass. They always love being moved. They immediately smoosh down a nice runway around the edge of the fence. Picking out the best bits of grass and catching insects, though there aren't many in this cold. They should get through this cold storm just fine. Until next time, Angela Kelly

preparing for the cold front

They are saying the temperatures are going to drop drastically over the next two weeks, starting with 3-6 inches of snow tomorrow. Yesterday we prepared the animals by giving the rabbits extra cardboard for insulation and snuggling down into. We reconfigured and anchored down tarps to protect them better from the wind. I reattached the ducks tarp so it wouldn't blow away. Gave them all a pile of hay.  I hope it snows early, so we can call into work.  I hate being gone all day, worried we won't make it home to check on them. ducks like their little crate - yesterday jonathan caught them cuddling up couple style :) the bun buns like their boxes Leela does not appreciate being photographed, please. duckies checking out their new patch of grass Until next time, Angela Kelly

pretty day ducks

The ducks seem impervious to cold weather, but that's certainly not to say they don't enjoy the warm days. They did a lot of swimming and splashing today. They have pretty well tore up their current spot on the garden, we plan to move them tomorrow. I used to think it was bad advertising to show pictures of the animals when the grass is eaten down and a mess, but the truth is it's real, sometimes it rains and gets muddy, sometimes we don't move them as often as we should. I want this place to be honest, so I share freely, even if the ducks are a little muddy. I hope you forgive me. They don't seem to mind much, anyways. Until next time, Angela Kelly

enduring the cold

our girl, Rose, huddled down in her hay I want to start off by saying, I love where we live. The climate here is nearly perfect. We are having a few very cold days this week, but so far this winter has been a piece of cake. The summer is hot, but not unbearably so. We get rain, but not too much or too little. I just love it here. I think this is truly my paradise. That being said, I hate the cold! The animals handle it much better than I do, but we still go out of our way to do what we can to make them comfortable. This includes bringing water out twice a day, stuffing the cages with hay every few days, extra food with added sunflower seeds for a little boost, and this weekend we also covered the front of the cages with tarps to stop any draft. The rabbits don't seem to mind much, they eat, don't move around much, hunker down. They enjoy the hay, you can tell.  The ducks seem impervious to the cold weather. We give them new hay every few days to warm and dry their ...
