where did spring go?

our own Mount Everest snow the last week of march, but not enough to get us out of work dangerous - this three car accident had six cops, two ambulances, and a firetruck Snow snow snow. I'm ready for spring already! Just the other day I was writing about spring! Well, what are you gonna do? It was just enough snow to make things interesting, we slid down the hill on the driveway and passed a big wreck on 460 going to work. It was a slow slow day, and thankfully we got to leave a little bit early. We checked on the animals and gave them all more hay since it is supposed to be cold and windy tonight. Some of the new baby rabbits are starting to come out of the nest box. I will take pictures of them soon, some have the cutest brown spots. Now, back to cleaning, prepping for tomorrow, and trying to squeeze in a workout before the night's over.  Until next time, Angela Kelly

raising rabbits: newborns in a wind storm

bunbuns love lettuces :)  We had eighteen baby rabbits last week, the first litters of the year. We also had a super wind storm the very day after they were born, which knocked the hutch over, and nearly scared me to death. We were in town and had to rush the hour home to check on them, and amazingly enough, they all survived. We shuffled them around, moved two moms with babies inside the house, secured the rest, prepared for the storm. We made it through okay. It's been almost a week now, and they are starting to get their fur and move around a lot, so we will be moving them back outside very soon. It has been pretty cool having them so close, keeping an eye on them all the time, watching them grow. Raising rabbits is always an adventure, and we are learning more every day. I sure am enjoying the process, though. the new mommy eating some lettuce newborns more babies - they look like little aliens the rabbits at sunset Until next time, Angela Kelly...

duck day

the boys always hide the girls when I come around with the camera my pretty girls Our little flock of ducks are funny to watch. The boys always guard the girls from people, dogs, whatever else might come near them. We need to move their coop and run soon, they have more than sufficiently beaten down this section of garden weeds. I'm excited for spring, probably mid-May, when we can get them some new friends to add to the flock. Until next time, Angela Kelly

snow days in march

Dakota is watching us from the hill. Zae is being a big baby. pretty snow snow snow snow snow ducks :) They are going to love their new pool, as soon as it warms up!  I am very much ready for winter to be over, but I have to admit it's a beautiful snow day.  It's still coming down pretty hard here, who knows how much we will end up with.  I'm glad it came on a Monday, when we were already off work and home for the day.  I have lots of lists and projects inside that need to be worked on, now to decide where to start... raising rabbits - the importance of petting

Donna, our New Zealand / Californian doe Storm, the new buck, adjusting quite nicely to his new home on the farm We raise rabbits for the purpose of meat; they are not pets. We don't baby them, they live outdoors year round, sometimes in cages, sometimes on grass. Since tending to the new buck Storm after he escaped and lived in the woods for five days, I have been thinking about the importance of petting when raising rabbits. We don't get out each rabbit every day and coddle it, however each morning when I'm giving them food, water and hay I do rub the rabbits down the back a few times. This is important to help monitor the health of the rabbits, you can tell a lot by running your hand over their spines, if they are too skinny or too fat, or if they have any sensitive areas. This isn't really petting, in most people's sense of the word, a few quick strokes down the back, but it makes a difference. In addition to monitoring the health of the rabbit, it ...

calm before the storm

home :) i love this mountain Bandit, the best farm dog.  It was beautiful today before the rain set in.  Even when it was raining, it was so warm, it felt nice. Refreshing.   I still haven't been feeling very good,  so I didn't enjoy it as much as I wish I had. Thankfully I still have tomorrow, and with a storm coming,  hopefully I can rest up before the work week starts.  I hope you enjoyed the nice day too! Until next time, Angela Kelly

baby blue duck eggs make me smile

Since the day before the storm last week we have been getting nearly a duck egg a day.  Beautiful baby blue duck eggs. It makes me very happy. The little wicker duckie makes me smile too. I have a red one two, they were goodwill gifts from my sister. I adore them. Until next time, Angela Kelly

real birthday fun, it wasn't all bad

sisters are foreva I was so focused on losing the rabbits the other day that I didn't share more about the fun parts of the weekend. I failed to point out that yes, my birthday is on February 14, Valentine's Day. It's good and bad. I grew up hearing, "Oh, a Valentine's baby!" every time I had to give that information to someone. When I was younger (think middle school) I was home schooled and obviously didn't have a booming social life. I didn't have my first boyfriend until eighth grade. Back then I always felt my birthday was ruined by my loneliness. Once I reached high school I entered a steady relationship and haven't spent one birthday/valentines single since. Honestly, I could care less about Valentine's, it's my birthday, and that's that. Which is how we all felt hanging out Friday night. My sister's fiance had to work, so we went to his restaurant to eat dinner so she could see him. We love Deacon, he's a great ...

birthday celebrations and complications

I have taken a little break from writing this weekend, enjoying my birthday by celebrating and relaxing. On Friday (my birthday) had dinner with my sister at Mac and Bob's where her fiance was working all night. After we drank tasty dreamsicle cocktails and danced around the kitchen to old old music. Saturday we had a little shindig on the farm, my older sister's family all came to visit (my brother in law, nephew, and two neices.) They brought me two new rabbits as a gift, both bucks and a perfect breed. I didn't have any cages free, but set them up in totes with cage wire over the top held down by a cinder-block.We drank coffee all day, caught up on our lives, talked about farming dreams and ambitions, just enjoyed the company of family. I taught the kids how to play The Sims, which occupied them the entire day. It was a good visit, I don't get to see them very often, and I love them soo dearly. Remember the cinder block topped rabbit totes? It was no...

an epic snow

This is the most snow we have seen in years, and it's pretty cool how wide spread the storm was, so many people experiencing it together. This afternoon we mainly relaxed, but made several trips outside to check on the animals, shovel the steps and sidewalks, un-bury the cars, etc. It's a beautiful snow. Roxy didn't like it at all hehe but my babies do snow ducks greenhouse skeleton winter wonderland I'm loving this snow, but I really hope we can make it to town tomorrow evening to celebrate my birthday! Until next time, Angela Kelly

the big storm - this morning's chores

We woke up to almost 16 inches of fluffy white snow this morning. The puppies were lunging though it, making trails for us to follow. The animals didn't seem to mind much, as usual. The ducks were eating up the snow and still interested in their water. The deep snow made their water bowl look like an in-ground pool! We took care of everyone, gave them plenty of hay, then shoveled the porch steps and sidewalk, called into work, and retreated back inside to watch round two of the snow which is now in full swing. I hate to miss work because I need the dough (haha) but it is nice to have a five day snow filled vacation for my birthday! Trilli the snow dog Jonathan and Dakota playing in the snow just like kids snow on the rabbit hutch bandit dog is covered the duckies in ground pool (or maybe a hot tub? we did use warm water...) Until this afternoon, Angela Kelly

the big snow - day one

welcoming us home Thankfully, we managed to dart out of work around three this afternoon, early enough to make it home, although the roads were quite covered and a little treacherous. The responsibilities that come with farming can be stressful in weather like this. We could easily have stayed in a hotel close to work, but then no one would be here checking to make sure the water isn't frozen, the hay is full, the tarps haven't blown open or off... so much can happen in a storm. But-we are here! Watching, tending, staying warm and doing our best to keep the animals warm as well. It's good to be here. looking at the barn and rabbits from the ducks the ducks just keep on swimming snow snow snow They say we may get over a foot. See you in the morning! Until next time, Angela Kelly

firewood chores with help

the subaru is our farm car super hero Yesterday afternoon while Jonathan was splitting the rest of a standing dead white oak I hauled a subaru load of firewood around to the back porch (closest to the wood stove.) It's surprising how much our little car can hold. I've also been impressed by how well he pulls up the driveway, unphased by mud, snow, and ice. I had some animal assistance unloading, Dakota and Roxy keeping me company. We accomplished quite a bit yesterday. get down from there crazy human Roxy hiding under the drying table beside me Until next time, Angela Kelly

morning owl

This morning, after inspecting the roads and calling into work for another snow day, I found the cutest little golden brown owl stuck inside the duck coop. It was frantically trying to get out of the chicken wire, and intermittently resting on the roost poles. I've never been this close to an owl before. It was amazing. I sat and watched it for nearly an hour. I walked back to the barn to get more hay for the ducks, and when I came back I thought he had flown away. When I reached the other side of the coop I saw that he was inside the dog crate the ducks use, nestled down in the hay like he belonged there. It was the cutest thing. I love this last picture, you can see him sitting on the wood in the corner of the coop watching. I wanted to keep him, but like all wild animals, he is meant to be wild, and flew away.
