our first farm babies



We came home from work this afternoon to eight healthy baby bunnies from our pretty girl Leela. We loaded up her cage with hay to keep them warm, and gave her some extra food. This morning I gave them all the leftover pulp from my juicing last night (a new found love) which they seemed to enjoy, as there was not a bit left this afternoon. I hope that all of the babies make it through the next several days until warmer weather arrives. 

The chicks and ducklings are settling in well. The difference is already apparent, the ducks splashing in the water and making a big mess, while the chicks peck their water carefully and spill hardly a drop. I'm glad that we did our homework and decided to go with two separate brooders. 

This weekend we finally have a day to focus on farm projects and the weather is looking nice. We are hoping to finish the frame for the rabbit tractor and start framing the chicken coop. There is also the garden to be tilled and prepared for plants, the greenhouse drainage to be dug, and a barn to clean and organize. Whew.

I must say, life is pretty good.

a few lessons in rabbit husbandry

We now have two years of experience under our belts raising rabbits. We have learned a lot of useful information already, but we are far from experts. That's the thing with farming, with raising animals, you will never be done learning. Bring it on. As of today we have 17 rabbits in our little group, and the more animals you have the more likely you are to have problems. Here are a few of ours: the girls The first problem we had is with the smallest litter we have, which we have had in a large dog crate on the grass. They are starting to get pretty big, and coming of age, they are starting to get a little frisky. This is bad news bears. I was out watching them and saw three boys ganging up on one girl, so in a hurry I fixed up a cage and moved her into it. love and communication

That's how life has felt lately, like a storm of anger and frustration. Thankfully things have turned around this last week, and life is sunny again. It's cold outside, and thanks to my distaste for winter weather (thank you, seasonal depression) farm projects have been relatively non-existent, except caring for the rabbits, who have settled into the farm quite nicely. I am still working on our master plan, which I cannot wait to share when it's finished.  Christmas and New Years were a blur with everything going on, but we still enjoyed ourselves (in doses). We spent time with both of our families, and ate entirely too much good food. New Years was also our anniversary, it has been an incredible three years sweetheart. We didn't do anything too fancy, but we did enjoy dinner, a few drinks with my sister (if that doesn't show you how important she is to us) and a couple of good movies. We did have the weekend off together to cuddle and do mushy couple stuff...
